Abstract Does immigration change support for redistribution? We design and conduct large-scale surveys experiments in six countries to investigate how people perceive immigrants these perceptions influence their redistribution. find striking misperceptions about the number characteristics of immigrants. In all countries, respondents greatly overestimate total immigrants, think are culturally religiously more distant from them, economically weaker—less educated, unemployed, reliant on favoured by government transfers—than they actually are. experimental part our article, we show that simply making before asking questions redistribution makes them less redistribution, including actual donations charities.
